Stream and river water quality is important for aquatic life, ecosystem health and human health. Understanding and managing potential impacts from nutrients entering streams and rivers is critical because it helps decision-makers and growers alike to implement effective, strategic agricultural practices. Food security and land stewardship principles should be essential elements of science-driven regulatory outcomes. Specifically, adoption of best management principles and practices have a vital role in improving water quality and improving food security and crop yield by reducing nutrient loss.
There are many land management practices that may accomplish such goals; however, characterizing and predicting the impact of an abundance of management options is not obvious. Region-specific weather, soils, fertilizer timing and type, and field drainage all factor together to make it difficult to understand the best local options that maximize yield and minimize potentially-adverse water quality effects. There is a need to use a scientific approach to develop a strategy that incorporates appropriate and effective land management practices that control water quality while optimizing crop yield.
Our mission is to support local efforts to develop strategies that may include a variety of land management practices dealing with nutrient loss, yield optimization and improved water quality. We provide this support through a number of services, including:
- field study design and data collection,
- data analysis and statistics,
- numerical simulations, and;
- information synthesis and interpretation.
We are a team of agricultural engineers and scientists that are integrated with technical expertise and stewardship-oriented state and federal regulatory experience.
We currently support people in Midwest organizations, such as commodity groups and city and state agencies, who have a need for reliable field data collection and novel and concise data analysis and interpretation. We use a science-based approach to help them understand and characterize potential and ongoing land management practices and strategies that impact water quality and food security implications for the grower and regulator.
Our services are simple:
- Hydrologic and water quality field study design and monitoring, including site selection

- Statistical analysis of environmental and land management parameters and field data

- Numerical simulation of field- and watershed-scale agriculture
